I'm not sure quite what he is, but he's having his first look around. I'm also not sure quite what he's seeing or what he things about it all. There's a curious thing about this painting, there is a ghost image that shows up when it's in bright light - like something behind the hatchling - maybe someone else is looking at him? But it looks more like a building or something. You'll have to figure it out for yourself.
